Coffee with my younger self
I got coffee with my younger self today~
She showed up 10 minutes early just like I did.
She ordered a short skinny mocha and I got an iced cold brew.
She was horrified to see how much weight I had gained. I got to tell her that one day we would thrive in remission and be away from the one who gave us our issues with body and food. She looked thrilled and almost like she didn’t believe me.
I also told her it’s really cool being able to run really fast and lift really heavy things and not feeling like fainting.
She asked if we were married with kids by the age of 22 and I said no. She looked horrified. She asked if I married the boy I had been crushing on since 8th grade, I told her no and her face looked altogether, not too disappointed.
She then asked if I were married at all. I was so happy to tell her yes, and that the wait for the right one was actually worth it and he's more incredible than what I had ever imagined in a husband. I told her that list in my old jewlery box of every attribute I ever wanted in a husband one day, I would get. Six pack abs and all!
She asked if I was teaching school and I told her no. Teaching didn't work out and she looked relieved. That was not a path she willingly chose but let someone make for her. I told her when went a different path and one day she would find her voice and be all the more powerful for it!
She then asked me if I was working and career driven, was I not a stay at home wife and mom? She didn’t know there was life for women outside of being a homemaker. I smiled from ear to ear and told her there is so much more to life than I ever thought or dared to imagine and there is an entire universe waiting for her outside of the domestic sphere.
I told her we married a younger man and we didn’t marry until the old age of 26. But waiting that long was the best decision and not painful like I think it will be. He is her soul mate, other half and bestest friend who will chase many dreams with her. I told her how aligned their values and life goals are and she got very excited.
She asked where he is right now and if she could meet him sooner. I told her that would spoil the magic if they met too soon. I told her you both need to spend this season of life apart and grow as individuals before falling in love. But, I made her smile when I told her that he's sat next to her in a crowd at one point and he goes to church with some of her cousins! Her jaw dropped, we both giggled.
I told her that all her fears don't have to be fears, because they will all work out. I told her that she is a light, and the life of the party and that it's time to stop listening to those who demand that we should dim our light.
Ok maybe I teared up just a bit in writing this! A great reflective prompt to get me through the mid-week madness. I could write SO much more to my younger self but that would take all day and all night! Thanks to Jana Kramer for the inspiration! Love this post idea but didn't want to put on a public platform lol
Time for an afternoon run and then making birthday dinner for the sweetest hubs in all the world!
