Saturday Morning Pre-Half Rituals
Some mornings don’t ask for much — just a little quiet, a little movement, and a delicious cup in your hands.
Today is one of those mornings.
Matt is working this weekend, but he did something so sweet before the day even started. He called me once he got to work around 4:50, just to wake me up and tell me he would be placing an order at the Dunkin on 17 for me to pick up once they opened at 5. He says I need all the sugar and carbs today so this iced vanilla has 4 vanilla swirl's and extra cream and sugar in it It’s the small things — the kind that instantly make the morning softer.
So here I am: iced coffee in hand, A Court of Wings and Ruin open on the counter, easing into the day before a short 4-mile shakeout run. Nothing ambitious, nothing to prove — just loosening the legs and keeping things light ahead of the Donna Half Marathon tomorrow morning. I may also do a bit of walking in my Alpha Fly's that I've only worn a handful of times. I love the white pair I wore in Chicago, but they're so new still they don't have that 'fits like a glove' feeling just yet. I need to break them in though because sadly, my orange ones are about to be found in a donation bin....they're looking rough and nearly 400 miles have been logged in them since the summer.
After the run, the plan is simple and practical: a quick stop at Goodwill and Target to hunt for layers. Tomorrow’s forecast is no joke — temps in the 20s with wind gusts up to 15 mph, which means it’s going to feel closer to 10°. Definitely a “dress for survival, not fashion” kind of race morning. Not going to lie you guys, this race is stressing me out already. I've never ran in this kind of cold before and I'm genuinely terrified of the kind of pain that comes from shivering in this level of cold.
Anybody up for doing shots at the race site in the morning? lol
But for right now, I’m staying right here in this moment — coffee, book, and calm — before the day gets moving. The sound of laundry drying is quite peaceful too when you really sit and listen to it. I love that background noise in a quiet house while I burn through pages of a good book. These in-between moments are my favorite. They don’t shout. They don’t rush. They just exist.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need before you lace up and head out into the cold.
