When Motivation Sleeps In
I’ve always wondered: what really gets us out the door? Motivation or discipline?
This morning, motivation didn’t even bother to show up. She hit snooze, pulled the covers over her head, and mumbled something about “maybe tomorrow.” But discipline? Discipline was already waiting by the door, lacing up her shoes, rolling her eyes, and reminding me that the weather wasn’t going to be 69° forever.
So out I went. It wasn’t a glamorous run — more of a limp-along week run than a triumphant one — but I came back with sweat on my skin, fresh air in my lungs, and that smug little satisfaction that only comes from doing the thing you didn’t want to do.
Motivation is fickle. Discipline is reliable. And maybe the difference between the two is the difference between “I should” and “I did.”
Tonight it’s chicken meatballs and an early bedtime. Tomorrow? An even earlier alarm, meetings stacked like dominoes, and deadlines waiting in line. But I can’t help but wonder… if discipline is what gets us started, is she also what keeps us going when motivation refuses to show?
